Meet the Owner- Twisted Mics
Twisted Mics is one of the QCA’s premiere entertainment vendors. In fact, on any given wedding night, this business may have up to nine djs deployed to area weddings. I was super stoked to sit down and chat with the owner, Kelley Klemme, and a few of his superstar employees.
We met at Klemme’s office in Moline’s Reliance Building. Klemme recently purchased the building, as well as The University Club which is housed in the first/ second floors. Partner Twisted Mics with The University Club, throw in a whole building to manage, as well as a photo booth business and a subscription-based dj app, and you’ve got one really busy guy.
Enjoy some of the highlights of our conversation.
How did your business start?
I started as an employee at Entertainment Expressions. My manager was getting married and was telling me how expensive wedding djs were. I figured, hey, I’ve got speakers and a ton of music on my laptop. I can dj for him. So I did his wedding and we ended up starting a business together. In the end, our goals for the business were different, so we parted ways, but that was the beginning of Twisted Mics.
What are your favorite parts of the job?
I really enjoy connecting with people, learning their stories, and creating a memorable emotional experience for them.
What wedding trends that you’re excited about and what do you wish you go away already?
We’re over the dollar dance. We’ll do it if a client really wants it, but there are so many more fun and engaging things to do instead.
We enjoy doing the shoe game, aka newlywed game, and are excited for winter weddings.

What words of advice can you offer engaged couples looking for wedding entertainment?
Make sure any professional you are considering has back-up equipment and people, experience in weddings, and knows how to structure a wedding/ reception. They should be outgoing and personable and a style that will fit your wedding.
What goals do you have for Twisted Mics?
I’d like to implement a franchise model first in the Iowa City/ Cedar Rapids area and then throughout all of the Midwest.
What makes Twisted Mics different?
We have a unique culture and provide an amazing client experience. We truly enjoy our job, love interacting with everyone, working with other vendors, networking, and providing guidance to our couples.
Throughout our conversation, the evolution of the role of the wedding dj was quite clear. The job is much more than playing songs. In numerous instances, Klemme referenced taking control and creating the flow of the reception. His team works to avoid awkward gaps between reception events by confirming times with on-site vendors and making sure everyone is on the same page.
