Registry Etiquette

Gift registries are a super fun way to compile your marriage wish-list! They’re an ideal way to reasonably guarantee that you won’t get twenty can openers and that you do get the bath towels in the color you wanted.

Before you start adding to your online registries or head to Bed Bath & Beyond, consider these basic wedding registry etiquette tips.

DO include items of all costs— Dyson vacuum to corn cob holders

Guests have varying budgets, but all would prefer to get you and your spouse something that you’ll love. And, as you near your wedding day, make sure that items of many price points are still available at all stores you registered at.

DO NOT wait too long— 6-8 months prior

Your registry will be used for engagement parties, showers, and your wedding day gifts. Make sure you have an active registry (or two or three) before these events.

DO remember that online ordering isn’t the same as going to the brick and mortar store

Some guests prefer to go to a brick and mortar store to select your gift. If you’ve compiled your registry entirely online, chances are that only a select few of your gifts will be available in-store. Address this by creating your registries in-store and supplementing it online OR use the search feature online to select in-store availability.

DO NOT include your registries on your invitation

Including this information in your wedding invitation comes across as tacky. Good etiquette dictates that you tell your close friend, families, and wedding party where you’re registered. Word will get around or guests will simply ask you, and that’s ok! You can, however, promote your registries on shower invitations and on your wedding website.

DO involve your future spouse in the registry process

Make it a date. Go out for lunch or dinner after you’ve had all the fun scanning items in the stores. Make sure both of you like the styles/ items you’re registering for and take turns registering for items geared toward each of you.

DO NOT include items you wouldn’t be comfortable opening in front of your new in-laws

How much elaboration is necessary here? Your in-laws, your parents, your god-parents, and every other person who will access your registry know what happens on the honeymoon. Choose the refined route of leaving that stuff off of your registry.

DO check the stores’ return policy

Some people inevitably won’t use the registry. And you may change your mind on some things. Make sure the return policy meets your needs.

BONUS- Check out what the store offers AFTER your wedding day. Most stores will give you a discount on items not purchased off of your registry.
