Addie Corby-Winn, owner of Little Sweets Cake Design, is not your normal cake-maker. This former art teacher has a strong artistic drive, one that makes her designs more like masterpieces. Today, QC Wed Me goes behind the scenes with this baker/ artist to chat about her business.

Why did you decide to go into the cake-making business?

I was teaching high school art and doing cakes at the same time. I had a desire to open a creative business and be my own boss, so I made the decision to go full-time and said good-bye to teaching.

What are your favorite parts of the job?

There’s so much about this job that I love! The tastings are great. I get to meet new people and talk about their vision for their wedding day. The cake baking and decorating part is fun, too, but not nearly as fun as delivering the cake and seeing the couple’s reaction. I love to see their faces when they see what I’ve created for them.

What wedding cake trend are you excited about?

I love the less traditional style. There’s so much that can be done with edible textures, hand-painted accents, and fresh flowers. These touches allow me to be so much more creative and make each couple’s wedding cake truly one-of-a-kind.

What are three of your favorite things?

1. Good Thai food

2. Taking my daughter, Roselan, for walks at Butterworth Gardens

3. Good chocolate— dark chocolate or super-rich chocolate desserts

Any advice for the newly engaged folks who are lining up vendors?

Meet with your potential vendors face-to-face. Look for those vendors that you really click with and who will help bring your wedding day vision to life.

What goals do you have for the business?

Couples will be seeing me at more bridal fairs. I’ll be scheduling more classes for people to learn basic cake decorating. And, I’ll have my storefront officially open sometime mid-2020. I can’t wait!

My background in art means I’m doing much more than making a cake. I create truly custom-designed desserts for my couples that are less traditional and more unique.
