How to Un-Invite Wedding Guests

With the limits on gathering size, many QCA couples are being forced to reconsider their guest list and even un-invite guests. It can be seriously awkward and most unpleasant, but their are some steps you can take to make the conversation easier on everyone.

Consider their feelings.

The guest(s) you’re un-inviting will be just as disappointed as you are. They were likely excited to celebrate with you. But, they are living through this pandemic just like all of us are. And, chances are that they are kind of expecting you to downsize your guestlist, or maybe even considering not attending themselves due to COVID concerns. Keep those things in mind as you open the conversation.

Shoot for an in-person discussion.

This sensitive topic is best addressed face-to-face. If that’s not possible, then pick up the phone. This is not the kind of conversation you should have via email or text. Keeping the personal touch shows validity to the un-invited guests’ feelings and demonstrates sincerity and concern for their feelings.

Guide the conversation to the future celebration.

As most couples are hosting an anniversary party or full-out reception at a later date, make sure to express your excitement to celebrate with them at a later date. This re-focuses the conversation on a happy topic and underscores the importance of their attendance when it’s safer for everyone.

Invite them to your virtual wedding.

If you have chosen to livestream your wedding ceremony, be sure to invite them to join you remotely. Send them a link or other directions via email or USPS in the week leading up to your ceremony.

Ultimately, your wedding guests would love to celebrate with you, but they’ve undoubtedly been affected by the pandemic and won’t be caught off guard with this discussion. Be sincere. Be honest. And your un-invited guests will be understanding.
